Chris Baker

Chris Baker

Hi my name is Chris Baker. I live in one of the most fabulous places in the Pacific Northwest, on Puget Sound in Port Orchard, WA with my husband Mark. We purchased Love Beads 3 1/2 years ago. Although you may not see him much, he is my go to fella/handyman whom I love very much.

I have 2 children, an adopted son Jason & his wife Jessica and a daughter Sara & her husband Nathan. Last year our first grandchild was born, Isabella Christine thanks to Nate & Sara.

I have a life time of artistic experience & about 5 years of serious bead shop experience. So, come in and ask questions, share your thoughts and have a wonderful time beading.

I grew up in Eastern Washington. My Mother, Rindi Smith, was the 1st female police officer in that half of the state back in 1975.

Beading has always been a passion for me. My mom helped me get started when I was 8 years old. She wanted me to make my own Christmas presents that year. I had so much fun building my own jewelry. When I was 12, a Native American woman had just opened a bead store in my hometown. Of course, I had to check it out. She taught me about weaving with seed beads. I made a keychain of beads over leather. It turned out so cool that my excitement for beading just kept growing. Now I was making all sorts of gifts for all my family and friends. I found that I loved beading. The rhythm of the stitching and the feel of the beads relaxed me. I built more and more designs. Whenever I was asked what I wanted for my birthday or Christmas I would always answer, "Beads or money to buy more beads!" I also dreamed of working in a bead shop. In my teens and early twenties, I went in search of my dream. I didn't seem to have enough experience or they were not hiring. Needless to say, I had to take other jobs.

My Husband and I moved to Port Orchard in the fall of 2003. I found work in Poulsbo, but it wasn't very long until I was again looking for work. I looked and looked. I then remembered there was a bead shop in the mall in Port Orchard. I took in my resume and talked to Chris. She had just purchased the shop and already hired all the people she needed. A few weeks later she called me in to work. I was so excited I could hardly contain myself. I have been blessed since May of 2004 to work here at Love Beads. Every day is an adventure and I love to come to work. Most people can't say that they get paid to play. Since starting here I have been absorbing new beading ideas like a sponge and I have also been so lucky as to teach classes too.

The adventure continues……

At a very young age, my mother decided I had artistic talent and encouraged me to try different mediums. However, I always returned to my one true passion, beads! In December of 1987 I tragically lost my husband to cancer. I turned to my only solace; beading. I found beading to be very therapeutic, and in the early 1990's I started my own business, Adobe Rose. Venturing out in my new chapter of life, I began vendoring at swap meets and festivals.

My passion and love for beads became an addiction, and even working full time at the local Wal-Mart, I don't feel complete without beading each day.

Chris Baker of Love Beads came to my work one day, never suspecting she was going to be meeting an artist sharing the very same love for beads. She asked me to bring my art to her shop so she could see all of my work . . . Chris now sells my art in her shop and I teach beading classes there on my days off.

My beading adventure began in May of 2003 when I saw a beautiful beaded lampshade that I wanted to make for my daughter. When looking for beads for the lampshade dangles, I saw an ornament cover in a bead store window and knew right away I had found my passion. Through encouragement from friends and family, I began designing my own patterns and have self-published a book and several individual patterns. Chris has graciously assisted me in continuing my beading adventures by selling my patterns and allowing me to share the joy of beaded ornaments with others through teaching.
